So last year’s wonderful spay/neuter bill is in process and the Dept of Ag is collecting funds, but the pet food industry is suing the governor for signing the bill. So that means the funds will most likely not be distributed this year. Hopefully by next year everything will be sorted out. It is just a tactic they are using to try to make other states think twice about following suit. As New Mexico is only one of four states that have tried to pass a pet food fee bill. (And for those of you who don’t think it is a good idea to increase fees to consumers, it usually doesn’t more than about $1/pet/year as well as our states already collects a fee which is much lower than most states in our country!!).
Anyway, that said, there will be distributions this year for the spay/neuter license plate fee as well as the state tax donation check off box for spay & neuter. There has not been any distribution in several years, so we are hopeful that we can receive more funding soon!
We still need donations and are still fixing dogs, mainly very special circumstances where there is more urgency as well as it is breed specific, i.e. pit bulls and mixes, but Covid took it’s toll on our non-profit, as it did with so many others.
